The IBS Dietitian
Kirsten JacksonΒ aka βThe IBS Dietitianβ is a UKβ¨consultant registered dietitian specialising in irritable bowel syndrome. Kirsten is fully trained low FODMAP dietitian and has incorporated this diet into her Take Control method for optimal results.
Before becoming a low FODMAP dietitian, Kirsten suffered with IBS herself. After realising that the low FODMAP diet was only part of the answer, she developed the Take Control method which incorporates a more holistic approach to support IBS sufferers.

π© Itβs a topic I get asked about all the time.. iron supplements and constipation.
β
Please note that not everyone needs an iron supplement but if your iron levels are low or at risk of becoming low then you will need a top up.
π© Sadly iron supplementation can cause a range of digestive issues in anyone, never mind those who already have IBS. This leads to people not following through and having low iron levels that are left uncorrected.
πββοΈ There is no need to choose between constipation and having health issues. Instead try my tips above. Most people I work with can tolerate regular iron supplements with a few tweaks and if not Iβve provided a different form of iron that you can ask your doctor about above which is easier on the gut.

ππ If you want to protect and improve your gut this year then please do not follow any NY resolutions which involve restrictions.
π© Dietary restrictions slow down the gut, reduce beneficial numbers of microbes, reduce gut microbe diversity and can also impact your gut through the interactions with the gut brain axis.
β€οΈ But this is not all doom and gloom – NY offers us a motivation boost to make a change. Letβs harness this and make a positive relation based on βaddition.β
π Here are a few things you can add into your diet and lifestyle that will help your gut thrive.
– aiming for 30 different plants each week
– adding a whole grain daily
– using a scientifically proven probiotic
– meditating daily
– moving daily (this does not need to be a hard core gym session!)
– getting 8 hours of sleep per night
– investing in working with a dietitian
β

π© It is a myth that meat or poultry need to be washed and this practise causes serious food poisoning.
π³The issue is that we may think washing something makes it cleaner and it is true that raw meat / poultry can be contaminated with germs like Campylobacter, Salmonella, or Clostridium perfringens. But when you wash it, those germs then end up all over your sink and surrounding areas. These germs then transfer onto anything which touches those areas like other foods, dishes being washed and even people`s hands.
π§So what are you supposed to do? Simply cook the meat / poultry at the recommended temperature in a pre-heated oven. This will kill off all those germs for you, without spreading it around your kitchen.
π€For specific recommendations on temperatures check online or the packaging as this will depend on the type of meat / poultry, frozen or fresh and the weight.

π« Did you know the humble olive oil could help with constipation?
β
It acts as a lubricant in the bowel
β
It stimulates bile acid production, some of which is not fully reabsorbed and so has a mild laxative impact
πββοΈUsing olive oil to massage your stomach for 15 minutes daily may also help to get things moving.
πββοΈ Not only do I love olive oil for these benefits but itβs also packed full of poly phenols which will keep your gut happy.

π§ Do you get any of these symptoms?
πWhilst it is possible to get any of these symptoms and have IBS, it is important to note that IBS does not directly cause them.
πββοΈI often see clients who delay treatment or feel frustrated that their IBS efforts are not working as they thought that these symptoms were part of the issue. By acknowledging what is and is not iBS we can start to target our health in a much more effective manner.
